“Low Cost Incredible Italian Food”
Just off of the Holloway Road and down the street from Arsenal's stadium, is a relatively undiscovered Italian restaurant serving incredible food at a crazy low price. Cooked fresh, right in front of you, they're perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner and any other excuse you can think of to nip in for a bite to eat. The owner, head chef and waiter are all rolled into one lovely old Italian fella, cooking anything off the hand written menu and anything else you could think to throw his way.
“Great food in unexpected location”
I love Mamma Mia, my friend and I go almost weekly and we are never dissatisfied (and this comes form an Italian, born and bred). The home made arancini are to die for, we always share one as an entree. The pasta dishes are very nice, but the pizza is definitely Mamma Mia's forte (and much easier to digest than those of the over-hyped Zia Lucia). The owners are also very nice and often offer off-the menu seasonal specials. If there is one thing that I could suggest is to mix up the menu every so often (having said that, specials often make up for it). The restaurant is small and cosy, it does have a real feel of an Italian trattoria. When the weather is nice it is also very pleasant to sit outside in the sunshine. Prices are extremely reasonable and they offer take away and student discounts.
“Great Sicilian home cooking”
Right by Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, we just popped in for a couple of arancini - rice balls stuffed with meat and tomato sauce and a coffee and a cassadedi - a sweetened ricotta turnover. The arancini (£3.50 each) were freshly made and oozing with tasty meat and the dessert was sweet and still warm. Almost went for a home made cannoli as well but managed some self control this time. The Italian guy next to us was tucking into some great looking pasta. The Sicilian owner did the cooking and both he and his wife were very friendly. Not sure how we haven't discovered this place before but will definitely be returning soon for a more substantial meal.
